Composite Bonded Tanks

The strength of steel meets the corrosion resistance of polyester in one super tough storage tank

Forgeweld’s composite bonded underground storage tanks combine the structural strength of steel with the corrosion resistance of fibre-glass-reinforced polyester, ensuring safe and problem-free fuel storage without requiring any external corrosion monitoring.

Features

Superior material composition

  • Constructed with 6mm SABS Grade 355JR carbon steel plate for structural integrity.
  • Coated with a 2,5-3mm Fibreglass Reinforced Polyester (FRP) shell, meeting UL1746 standards, for corrosion resistance.

These tanks have high tensile strength and impact properties, making them ideal for the safe storage of all blends of conventional and oxygenated fuels, including methanol.

Built to high spec

Forgeweld Composite Bonded Steel Tanks are built with shell-and head-thickness to SANS 1535/UL 58 specifications. Before applying the GRP laminate coating, the external surface is blast-cleaned to grade SA 2,5, as defined in ISO 8501-1 (SANS1535 standard).

A 2.5mm coating of isophthalic resin reinforced with chopped fiberglass is applied to the tank’s entire exterior surface (UL 58). The finished cladding is quality checked by a 35 000-volt holiday test over 100% of its surface to ensure there are no discontinuities in the coating.

Problem-free performance

Fully insulated from the surrounding soil and equipped with isolating bushes, Forgeweld Composite Bonded tanks require no cathodic protection or external corrosion monitoring.

Adaptable to your needs

  • Fitted with lifting lugs or flanged or dished ends.
  • Top 745mm diameter manholes with filler, dip, breather and pump-suction apertures.
  • Optional: A forecourt manhole can be supplied if required.
  • Drop pipes are also fitted to order.

Top quality & safety standards

Forgeweld composite bonded tanks are manufactured to meet and even exceed the requirements of the world’s top standards authorities, ensuring unmatched quality.

Composite Tanks: Covers material testing and application of the 2,5mm FRP coating applied to the external surface of every Forgeweld composite tank.

In terms of this standard, the application of a 2,5mm FRP coating allows manufacturers to reduce shell tank thickness. We don’t exercise this concession, thus ensuring that the structural strength and integrity of our composite tanks exceed that called for by this standard.

Governs Glass Reinforced Polyester Coated Steel Tanks for underground storage of hydrocarbons and oxygenated solvents intended for burial horizontally:

Regular inspections and tests by the SABS ensure our compliance with this standard.

The steel used in the manufacture of our composite tanks conforms to this specification.
