SMARTFLEX and SMARTCONTAINMENT Piping Systems by NUPI

Bologna, Italy, is one of Europe's leading manufacturers of integrated piping and jointing systems for use in buried applications handling various grades of petroleum fuels and alcohols. Extensive research and NUPI's 25-year experience in thermoplastic processing have resulted in the SMARTFLEX and SMARTCONTAINMENT piping systems.

Hydrocarbon and Corrosion Resistant

The SMARTFLEX and SMARTCONTAINMENT systems comprise multi-layered piping consisting of an outer casing of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) with an internal lining of high performing engineering thermoplastics. Piping joint components consist of electro-welded fittings manufactured from proprietary materials and technologies which ensure a high level of hydrocarbon and corrosion resistance. SMARTFLEX and SMARTCONTAINMENT are approved and used by numerous major international petroleum companies.

SMARTFLEX - Outclassing the Rest of the Field

Piping: Resilient and Resistant

By combining the excellent mechanical properties of HDPE with the low permeability and high resistance to fuel degradation of a new class of polymers (engineering thermoplastics), NUPI have created piping which offers a level of hydrocarbon compatibility unattainable by other fuel pipes on the market. The internal lining of the SMARTFLEX single wall pipe is a film which is colour-coded either green or yellow. This colour-coding allows for the correct matching of product and application. Green designates pipes designed for product lines i.e. suction, pressure and filling lines as well as those which are directly in wet fuel service. Yellow designates pipes designed for vapour recovery, vent lines and any lines which do not transfer liquid fuel. The film on the internal surface of both green and yellow-coded pipes protects them from vapour induced effects such as swelling and chemical de-rating. For further ease of identification, green-coded pipes in wet service have two corresponding dotted green lines, spaced at 180°, running along their black outer wall. Similarly, yellow-coded pipes for vapour service have two dotted yellow lines on their black external surface.

SMARTFLEX piping provides exceptional long-term resistance to pressure, is highly resilient and ensures superior chemical resistance.

Fittings: Safe and Corrosion-free

The SMARTFLEX system offers a vast range of fittings, including electro-welded couplers, which provide safe, corrosion-free and leak-proof couplings, spigots and mechanical fittings and entry boots. With the exception of the mechanical fittings, all items are provided with welding witnesses which "pop up" as welding proceeds, thus allowing the installer to keep a record of installed fittings. The proprietary materials and technologies from which the components are manufactured ensure an unique degree of hydrocarbon resistance, placing the SMARTFLEX system, way ahead of competitors in its field.

SMARTCONTAINMENT - NUPI's Greatest Innovation Yet

Piping: Quick, Easy, Effective Containment

SMARTCONTAINMENT consists of a high-pressure double-wall piping system - effectively a 'pipe inside a pipe', providing more demanding containment and monitoring requirements. The inner pipe consists of the SMARTFLEX system (described above), running inside a second pipe, similarly constructed from HDPE. The internal and external pipes are connected by SMARTCONTAINMENTPLUS fittings which allow a continuous interstice between them, as well as pressure testing and monitoring using test ports fitted with quick-fit connectors and a pressure medium such as nitrogen. SMARTCONTAINMENT eliminates the use of costly sumps which are replaced by small pans located beneath each dispenser. In addition, SMARTCONTAINMENTPLUS fittings make the installer's job quicker and easier as adapters welded directly to double wall fittings reduce the number of required junctions.

Leak monitoring systems and a comprehensive range of tools and equipment for correct system installation complete the SMARTFLEX/SMARTCONTAINMENT range.

SMARTFLEX  and SMARTCONTAINMENT have been developed for use in buried applications and for the transport of fuels such as leaded and unleaded gasoline, kerosene, diesel, aviation fuels, methanol, ethanol and other alcohols. Optimum operating temperatures are between -20°C and 50°C. Optimum operating pressures should not exceed 350kpa but interstice pressure can be up to 400kpa. Friction loss using the SMARTFLEX system is approximately 66% that of similarly sized galvanised pipes.

Correct installation requires appropriate tools and installer training. It is important that piping is transported and handled correctly at all times and that the handler abides by all instructions relating to cutting, cleanliness and welding. Forgeweld is happy to provide its customers with the necessary help and guidance.

Packaging: Pipes measuring 90mm and less are usually supplied in coils or straight lengths of 5.6m, while those measuring 110mm and larger are always supplied in 5.8m lengths.
